Wound and Skin Infections


            Infection can develop after an injury or wound to the skin. Infection in a cut or other skin wound can occur from your own skin bacteria, from bacteria in the environment, or from bacteria on the puncturing object. A wound infection is when bacteria enter a break in the skin. Symptoms of infection may include:Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area, Red streaks extending from the affected area, Drainage of pus from the area, Fever, etc.


You may have the following tests: 


  • Bacterial wound culture
  • Gram stain
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility
  • KOH prep
  • Fungal culture
  • AFB culture and smear
  • Blood culture
  • Urine culture
  • DNA or RNA testing
  • Ultrasounds or x-rays
